“Practice”

each’ /ēCH/
determiner
Used to refer to every one of two or more people or things, regarded and identified separately.

I think of these first and foremost as abstract paintings. Each starts with one image, and is resolved with a second, and sometimes a third. The reaction to the first layer dictates the final composition, so each painting finds its own visual logic intuitively. It’s a process of listening and responding.

The images referenced to make each layer are photographic and tend to take up the entire composition, thereby interrupting each other. Hearing two people talking over each other would be a good comparison. Each voice speaks in a clear and communicative manner, but when heard in tandem clarity becomes murky and the listener must actively participate in discerning anything cohesive. I’m interested in this breakdown of communication visually, and how harmonies can be discovered therein.

‘Practice’ is a collection of acrylic paintings on raw stretched canvas made during the winter of 2025/2026.
